About the hall
The present hall was opened on 3 May 1990, with the benefit of a generous grant from the National Lottery Fund and replaced the original Victory Hall, which had been built soon after the First World War, through a generous donation by the Woodward family of Hopton Court, who have been significant benefactors in the village (along with their ancestors, the Botfields) for 200 years. At the same time, the adjoining field was purchased and leased to the village school to provide playing facilities. The school closed in 2013 and the field is now turned over to haylage - so is now out of bounds.
The conservatory was added in 2000 and the children's play area was significantly updated withe new equipment in 2010.
The hall is managed and maintained by a registered charity (England and Wales, number 522533) which was set up in 1961 when the land on which it sits was donated by the Woodwards. It is held in trust "for the purpose of a village hall for the use of the inhabitants of Hopton Wafers and the neighbourhood (hereinafter called “the area of benefit”) without distinction of sex or of political, religious or other opinions and in particular for use for meetings lectures, and classes, and for other forms of recreation and leisure-time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants."
